Freesync Vs G Sync – Which One is Worth It?

Which One is Worth It-

If you are a pro gamer, you will know the agony of screen tearing during a game. The annoying way your correctly rendered title becomes gross due to horizontal lines and stuttering in the video.

Nvidia V-Sync

You can always turn on V-sync through Nvidia or Dynamic V-sync through AMD control panel, but if your system is not capable of handling all the extra processing, your performance in the game could be severely affected.

Graphics processing giants Nvidia and AMD have looked into the issue and come up with a solution that preserves the framerates as well. Both their solutions are based on adaptive refresh rate technology.

What is Adaptive Refresh Rate Technology?

It is a game-changing technology that is slowly seeping into mainstream implementation. Traditionally any personal computer monitor/display has a fixed refresh rate, meaning the screen refreshes itself those many numbers of times in one second. For example, if the refresh rate of a monitor is 40Hz, the display refreshes itself 40 times in a second.

This refresh rate of the monitor is independent of your graphics processor. So your graphics processor tries its best to send forth the frames to the display at whatever speed it can. This results in part of the display stuck on one frame while another part of the screen is stuck on another frame, popularly known as screen tearing.

In adaptive refresh rate technology, the graphics processor and the display communicate with each other, the result being a constant change of the refresh rate according to the images sent to the screen by the graphics processor. G-Sync processor is Nvidia’s solution to implement adaptive refresh rate while FreeSync is AMD’s find for the same.

Now that you know what is FreeSync and G-Sync. Do let us perform an analysis of FreeSync Vs G-Sync to determine which one would suit your requirements more.

24-inch1920x1080 (1080P) (Full HD)

If you’re asking is FreeSync worth it, we would say the greatest advantage to gaming with FreeSync is the cost. Using AMD’s FreeSync technology, you’ll spend less on a PC monitor to use it with and even lesser on a graphics card of the current generation. You might have to sacrifice a little power and features like 4K gaming, but what you will have is smooth and crisp graphics along with a lot of money left in your pocket.

If you’re asking is G-Sync worth it, we would say it depends on the way you game. If your taste in gaming allies itself with the latest bleeding edge and most powerful of everything, you should get a Nvidia card with G-Sync technology. Since price is not an issue for you, you can spend easily on this technology and a dedicated monitor to go with it.

Now, you might be asking why not take the best of both worlds, i.e., use a FreeSync monitor with a Nvidia card? Yes, it is definitely possible to do that. However, you must keep in mind that  FreeSync won’t work to its optimal performance with a Nvidia card. The portable monitor will still work amazingly well as a 144Hz 1440p monitor, but the feature of variable refresh rate will not be available. On the plus side, you won’t have to pay a bomb for the monitor, so if it meets your gaming requirements, combining a FreeSync monitor with a Nvidia card can work well too.
